On March 22, 1988, the Nanjing City Wall Management Office was established, which was under the Nanjing City Garden Bureau and was mainly responsible for the protection, maintenance and management of the ancient city wall.

In 1993, the Nanjing City Wall Management Office was officially placed under the Nanjing Municipal Bureau of Cultural Relics.

On May 24, 1998, Nanjing Ming City Wall History Museum was officially opened to the public, whose main task was to carry out the collection, research, display, publicity and education of the historical materials of Nanjing Ancient City Wall.

December 2014, Nanjing City Wall Protection and Management Center has been established, which integrates the public institutions responsible for city wall management and heritage application into Nanjing City Wall Protection and Management Center. Its responsibility is to clarify the protection and management, development and utilization of Nanjing City Wall and heritage application work within the scope of protection and control.
